Fife residents since 1955, Judge and Mrs. Knodel were passionate advocates of higher education. He was raised on a farm in North Dakota then moved to Washington in 1944. After serving his country during WWII, he married Margaret Duncan, a registered nurse who came from Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Puget Sound and earned a law degree from the University of Washington. He wrote the documents to incorporate the City of Fife. He practiced law and simultaneously served as the Municipal Court Judge of Fife from 1950 to 1979. Margaret worked in the law office as well as continuing her nursing career. From 1979 to 1985, he was a Pierce County District Court Judge. Their four children attended Fife schools and graduated from college. Judge and Mrs. Knodel always appreciated the importance of education and the quality of education provided by the Fife School District.

Applicants must be a senior graduating from Fife High School.

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better from 9th - 12th grade.

Applicants must demonstrate service to community and/or school.

Applicants must be pursuing a 4 year College degree.

Applicants must include two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers or community leaders.
